Candle Care

At Rustic Glow Candle Co., every candle is hand-poured using 100% soy wax and premium cotton wicks to provide a clean, long-lasting burn. Following these simple care tips will help you enjoy the best fragrance throw, maximize burn time, and keep your candle performing beautifully. Proper wick trimming, allowing a full melt pool to develop, limiting burn sessions, and following basic candle safety are widely recommended best practices for soy candles.

Care Tips, Tricks, & Troubleshooting

The First Burn

Your first burn is the most important.

Allow your candle to burn until the melted wax reaches all the way to the edge of the jar.

Recommended burn times:

  • 18 oz Candle: approximately 2–3 hours

  • 35.75 oz Candle: approximately 3–4 hours

This prevents tunneling and creates an even "memory burn" for the life of the candle.

Trim Your Wicks

Before every burn:

  • Trim each wick to ¼ inch (6 mm).

  • Remove any wick trimmings from the wax.

  • Use a wick trimmer for the cleanest cut.

Keeping your wicks trimmed helps:

  • Produce a cleaner flame

  • Reduce soot

  • Prevent mushrooming

  • Extend the life of your candle

Burn Time

For the best performance:

  • Burn your candle for at least 2 hours once lit.

  • Do not burn for more than 4 hours at a time.

  • Allow the candle to cool completely before relighting.

This preserves fragrance quality and prevents overheating.

Keep Your Candle Safe

Always:

  • Burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

  • Keep away from drafts, ceiling fans, and open windows.

  • Keep away from curtains and flammable materials.

  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.

  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Drafts can cause uneven burning, excessive flickering, and soot.

When to Stop Burning

Discontinue use when approximately ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar.

Burning below this level can cause the glass container to overheat.

My Candle is Tunneling

If the candle wasn't allowed to form a full melt pool during the first few burns, tunneling can occur.

To help correct it:

  • Burn the candle for a longer session.

  • Keep away from drafts.

  • Ensure the wicks are trimmed properly before lighting.

My Flame is too High

This usually means the wicks are too long.

Simply:

  • Extinguish the candle.

  • Allow it to cool.

  • Trim each wick back to ¼ inch before relighting.

My Candle has Black Soot

Soot is typically caused by:

  • Long wicks

  • Drafts

  • Burning longer than four hours

Trim the wicks and move the candle away from moving air.

My Candle isn't Smelling Strong

For the best scent throw:

  • Allow the wax pool to fully melt.

  • Burn in an appropriately sized room.

  • Keep the candle covered with its lid (if it has one) when not in use to preserve fragrance.

Candle Storage

To keep your candle looking and smelling its best:

  • Store in a cool, dry place.

  • Keep out of direct sunlight.

  • Replace the lid (if it has one) after each use to keep dust out and preserve fragrance.

Proper storage helps reduce discoloration and fragrance loss over time.

Reuse Your Jar

Once your candle has reached the end of its life:

  1. Allow any remaining wax to cool.

  2. Place the jar in the freezer for several hours.

  3. Remove the remaining wax.

  4. Wash with warm, soapy water.
